Learn from St. Ignatius of Loyola, Work for the Greater Glory of God

Fr. Taroh Amédé, S.J. shares a reflection on the impact of charity on the feast of St. Ignatius

In 2023, I was introduced to a widow in Chad. She had two young children and lived in a house so poorly built that it often flooded during the rains. Her children were not in school because she couldn’t afford the fees. In Chad, people often say, “Father always has a solution,” and this woman came to me saying, “Father, I came to see you because I don’t want to die and leave my children without a future.” Her words pierced my heart.

Before I left Chad for the USA later that year, a generous friend—who prefers to remain anonymous (may God bless her!)—gave me a monetary gift to use as I saw fit. I used part of it to help this widow. With that small support, she started a small business selling ground nuts and both powdered and liquid soap. That modest venture enabled her to pay her children’s school fees. Her hope—and her dignity—were restored. Her story, though simple, speaks volumes. It is a powerful reminder that even small acts of kindness can change lives.

On this day, July 31, we give thanks to God for the life of a man who devoted himself to the Church and to humanity—St. Ignatius of Loyola. His great example continues to call us to be men and women for others.

Guided by the motto Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam—“For the Greater Glory of God”—St. Ignatius’ vision still inspires people around the world to serve where the needs are greatest. His legacy ignited a global mission that, for nearly five centuries, has shaped education, social justice, and pastoral outreach across every continent.

Nelson Mandela once said, “If you want to destroy a nation, do not use weapons—destroy its educational system.” Ignatius understood this centuries earlier. The Jesuits, together with our lay collaborators, know of the transformative power of education. We continue to walk with the poor, ensuring that even those who struggle to afford a meal or pay school fees are not forgotten. We know that providing an education means we are opening the opportunity for a brighter future.

As a Jesuit from Chad working as the Development Officer for American Jesuits International (AJI), I am blessed to be a bridge between those in need and those with the means to help them. I am deeply moved each day by the struggles of people in Latin America, Africa, and Asia who lack access to basic education and are often marginalized. At the same time, I am inspired to see the impact of our global mission and grateful to each person who helps us attend to those in need.

Through our office, the Society of Jesus contributes by praying for those who are suffering, accompanying them in their journeys, and providing financial support to help them build a more self-sufficient futures.

I believe that you, the reader of this message, are someone with a compassionate heart—drawn to support people in the developing world through Jesuit schools and other life-changing initiatives. AJI is here to make that support possible, ensuring it reaches those in need with transparency and accountability. Just as my friends generosity helped the widow in Chad, you too can change the life of someone in need.

As we celebrate the legacy of St. Ignatius today, please consider joining us in our global mission of Jesuit solidarity. May the Lord bless you and reward your generosity a hundredfold.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola, pray for us.
