The Impact on Fe y Alegría

Our strategic partner, Federación Internacional de Fe y Alegría, has been directly impacted by the suspension of U.S. foreign aid. This sudden stop work order has impacted over $5 million dollars in funding for programs including early childhood education, formal & non-formal education, psychosocial support, school meals, and job training initiatives.
We are working hard to secure new funding from family foundations, religious organizations, and generous donors like you so that these programs can continue their important work. We need to feed children at schools, give the smallest amongst us a safe place to learn while their parents work, and help educate and train the next generation of leaders. Your support can help our friends at Fe y Alegría weather this storm and continue building towards a brighter future for us all.

“Our primary funding has always been local, as national governments should be responsible for and guarantors of educational systems. However, we also believe that in areas of extreme vulnerability, the international community has a responsibility to protect and ensure essential rights such as education, health, and a healthy environment. These global public goods transcend borders and are the responsibility of all humanity.”

In Solidarity with our Partners

How you can help right now.

In response to the suspension of foreign aid, we reaffirm our commitment to the Ignatian values that guide our mission. Values which compel us to stand in solidarity with those most in need, to uphold the inherent dignity of every person, and to advocate for the protection of human rights across all spheres.

We are working with network partners to advocate for the restoration of the international affairs budget. In the interim, though, we need your support. Please consider supporting our efforts in two ways:

Donate

  • Every Dollar Counts

Make a donation to American Jesuits International to provide vital and urgent support to individuals and communities whose livelihoods and access to essential programs have been interrupted by this pause in U.S. Aid.
  • Advocate

Send an email to the Department of State calling for the restoration of the international affairs budget.

    We Choose Steadfast Hope

The suspension of U.S. foreign aid has already led to significant uncertainty for our partners in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. It is also a difficult moment for our organization and so many other wonderful non-profit organizations who are working with poor and marginalized communities around the world.

In times like these, the Gospel message of hope and faith in the Lord is all the more important. We are reminded of Jesus’ call to serve those most in need and the promise that our acts of generosity will return in abundance:

‘Give, and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.’ – Luke 6:38

Together we remain committed to accompanying and supporting our partners. We remain united in faith and inspired by our love for one another. We are confident that good will and a desire to build a brighter future will inspire generosity and solidarity to continue this essential work.

"Reevaluating and Realigning United States Foreign Aid"

    Executive Order - January 20, 2025

The U.S. government announced an executive order last week titled “Reevaluating and Realigning United States Foreign Aid.” The directive mandates an immediate pause on new foreign aid spending and a stop-work order on existing grants and contracts for at least 90 days. While the order is aimed at reassessing the strategies and allocations for the distribution of U.S. foreign aid, the suspension of projects currently underway is already causing significant disruption to services provided by our Jesuit partners.

We have received confirmation that member organizations of our strategic partner, the International Federation of Fe y Alegría, had their U.S.-government-funded programs suspended as of last Friday. Programs like these help kids stay in school around the world, they keep food on the table for some of the poorest families, and they provide essential medical attention to those in need.
