A Word from Our Staff: August 2026

Each month, we invite a member of our staff to share a reflection that has been on their mind. This month, Jenn Hollinger, our Development Manager, reflects on the themes of World Humanitarian Day and her own experience working amid humanitarian crises.

I spent much of my career working on development projects in some of the world’s most complex operating environments, often in the middle of humanitarian crises. One thing that crystalized for me is that the most lasting solutions belong to the communities themselves. The mothers who know exactly what their children need, the elders who understand their land, the neighbors who have helped one another long before any aid worker arrived; they are the ones who lead.

Our role is to listen and to uplift, not to impose, to stand with local communities and empower them to implement the solutions they create. This is what solidarity means, and it is what the Jesuits practice all over the world.

That conviction is the heart of this year’s World Humanitarian Day message. The reflections that span many countries and many years, from this summer’s earthquakes in Venezuela to crises far from the news. What I have always believed is that survival is not enough. People should be empowered to come through a crisis with their dignity, autonomy, and voice intact.

Standing in solidarity with local communities is the kind of work that American Jesuits International is proud to support, and it depends on you. With humanitarian funding greatly reduced, your generosity matters more than ever. It lets local partners lead, serve their own communities with care, and treat every person with respect for their inherent dignity.

Thank you for standing alongside us and the people we serve.
