American Jesuits International (AJI) is the international solidarity organization of the Society of Jesus in the United States. Inspired by Ignatian spirituality, AJI supports Jesuit education and development initiatives in marginalized communities in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, while building support and fundraising for that work in the United States.

Yes. American Jesuits International is the same organization that operated as Magis Americas from its founding in December 2005 until 2024. In 2023, the Magis Americas Board of Directors approved a merger with Jesuit Missions International, Inc. (JMI), another U.S.-based Jesuit organization, a move which combined the Jesuits international mission offices under the new name American Jesuits International on July 1, 2024. 

American Jesuits International mobilizes financial and institutional support for Jesuit education and development initiatives in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Rather than running programs directly, AJI supports and accompanies Jesuit partner organizations that implement the work in the communities they serve.

American Jesuits International supports projects in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Current project countries include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Venezuela, and Zambia, primarily through Fe y Alegría International and the Comparte networks.

American Jesuits International’s two Strategic Global South Partners are the Federación Internacional de Fe y Alegría (FIFyA) and the Comparte Network. FIFyA is the largest Jesuit school network in the world, a popular education movement active in 22 countries, which promotes and defends the right to a quality education. Comparte is a Jesuit network of solidarity-economy organizations. A community of learning and action formed in 2010, they work to construct, together with producer organizations and other allied entities, economic-productive initiatives as alternatives to the dominant development model. AJI also supports Jesuit organizations outside those two networks in service of the Jesuits social initiatives in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

American Jesuits International is governed by a Board of Directors and a Board of Members. AJI is a shared work of two Jesuit bodies — the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States (JCCU) and the Conferencia de Provinciales de América Latina y el Caribe (CPAL) — reflecting its role connecting U.S. and Canadian Jesuit institutions with Jesuit partner organizations across Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

Yes. American Jesuits International is the U.S. member organization of the Xavier Network, a network of Jesuit development NGOs and mission offices from Europe, North America and Australia. AJI joined as the network’s 14th member overall and its second North American member, alongside Canadian Jesuits International (CJI), which allows AJI to work in faith to promote justice, ensure consistent safeguarding practices, and coordinate humanitarian appeals around the world.

American Jesuits International organizes its work around four priority areas. Education: programs which supports early childhood, primary, secondary, and inclusive education, plus teacher training. Livelihoods: programs which supports the dignity of work and income-generating activities, including vocational training and entrepreneurial efforts. Environmental Sustainability: programs which support sustainable production and consumption practices and environmental education. Humanitarian Assistance and Recovery: programs which promote solidarity with the people affected by disasters, prioritizing response, recovery, and resilience amongst impacted marginalized communities.

Fe y Alegría (“Faith and Joy” in Spanish) is a Jesuit-founded global movement advancing quality, inclusive public education as a path to dignity and opportunity. For over 70 years, it has served marginalized communities across 22 countries in Latin America, Africa, and Europe, reaching more than 760,000 students annually through 1,800+ education centers. Founded in 1955 in Caracas, Venezuela, Fe y Alegría is rooted in the belief that education is a human right, a public good, and a transformative force for individuals and communities. Fe y Alegría is one of AJI’s two strategic partners and the network was a key promoter of AJI’s founding in 2005.

Comparte is a network of Jesuit-affiliated solidarity-economy organizations, a community of learning and action, developing new economic and productive alternatives that provide dignified livelihoods for excluded populations in Latin America. The Comparte Network responds in part to the complex reality of social exclusion experienced by many communities in Latin America which is amplified by global climate change. Sharing lessons learned, working to create and strengthen production alternatives, and banding together to care for their communities and our common home, the network is allowing their people to stay in their local communities and still achieve “el Buen vivir” or the “good life.” Comparte member organizations include Siembra in Cuba, Yomol A’tel in Chiapas, Mexico, and Solidaridad CVX in El Salvador.
